Finance intern

June - August 2019 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

I loved how open people were to meeting with interns and discussing anything from project-based questions to career and life paths. I felt valued and that my work was contributing to solutions for the company.

What I wish was different

Location is definitely not the company’s strongest area, but you get what you put in. I was intentional about spending my weekends in the area and found things to do.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to network! People are genuinely excited about interns and love talking with them. I reached out to multiple people across different functions to hear about what they do and get a sense of where I might want to end up. It was my way of interviewing the company throughout the summer to see if it was a place I would want to return. Doing the work on the front end makes it easier to make a decision at the tail end!

Business Analyst

May - August 2018 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

Whirlpool had a heavy emphasis on networking. They often held workshops to update your LinkedIn, how to write good emails, etc. It was also required for me to give several presentations throughout my internship. I think I developed my communication and presentation skills.

What I wish was different

There was zero structure to the program. I often felt like I was wasting my time there. Whirlpool recruited for students with computer science/information systems/computer systems background...but our skills were not utilized. It was all more or less clerical work.

Advice

Utilize the resources around you and get involved with volunteer experiences. They lend to a more meaningful internship.

Noise & Vibration Engineer

June 2016 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

My work contribution in the research & engineering division at Whirlpool gives me a great pleasure to always find that my work directly creates value to millions of consumers around the globe making their daily lives easier. The opportunity to work with a global team placed in 4 continents makes it highly exciting to bring the innovation that can commonly benefit even the cross-cultural interests. At Whirlpool, I was given the freedom to critically think, challenge ideas in a team & thus help towards bringing only the best work to reality on behalf of the company. I like that my insights, comments are always taken into consideration towards eventual decision making. At last, most importantly, managers & peers here push you above your limits while still being helpful with a positive intention to grow together inclusively.

What I wish was different

The fact that the company is huge & is diversified across continents, makes it hard initially, to find & meet the right people to reach out for collaboration as part of cross-functional projects. Although it doesn't result in heavy loss of time,. I wish there was a much seamless process to understand the overall roles, responsibilities & skill sets of employees working at any point of time.

Advice

The biggest take-away so far from my experience is: You can always be confident in demonstrating your work as long as you provide a clear line-of-thought that impacts the end-consumer - the key stakeholders. In this process, especially for fresh graduates, it's okay to make mistakes sometimes when you are new to the work force but what's more important is not to make the same mistake again"

Finance intern

June - August 2019 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to network with leaders from various functions of Finance. We were also paired with a buddy in the full-time program and a mentor who was a senior manager.

What I wish was different

The location doesn’t have many things for young adults, but the company did a great job of planning events for interns.

Advice

Take the first step! Don’t be afraid to ask someone to lunch and learn about their role. The employees truly value interns and view them as future talent.

Human Resources Intern

May - August 2018 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

Whirlpool is a family-oriented company. I liked the company-wide professional development events. These events made it easier to learn about different aspects of the business. I also enjoyed the event held for the interns halfway through the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish the HR internship were more structured and collaborative. I didn't get the chance to interact with my cohort as much as I would have liked to.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunity to meet with people cross-functionally and with business leaders.

Finance Development Program Intern

May - August 2021 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the exposure and challenge the program offered. Coming into the internship I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. I really enjoyed the help I was able to receive from GVSU Alum and other people who have been in the program. It was a very collaborative work environment and everyone was looking to help.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been in-person. It was a virtual internship, which made it difficult at first. But after a few weeks I was able to adjust and excel.

Advice

I would tell people not to be scared to ask question and to make sure to network. The most important thing is that they know your interest in the program as well as they want to know you are trying your hardest to excel on your project.
